What started as an inside joke has become something of a compulsive faux pas: the Wilhelm Scream, a canned shriek that was first cleverly inserted into films as a wink and a nod between sound designers, has gotten a bit out of control. At least some sound designers are now disguising their Wilhelm Screams. But … Continue →

Add to myYahoo! Not all wood is cut into nice rectangular shapes. This is especially true when you’re looking for novel blanks like pieces of burl to turn into beautiful centerpieces. But before turning the blank you need to figure out the largest or best material it will bare.
Made from 1/8″ acrylic, the Bullzeye Woodturner’s Center Finder has concentric circles marked every quarter inch and will mark circles up to 10″ in diameter. Although it’s called a center finder, it’s really more of a usable material finder.
Once you’ve included the figure or features you want and excluded the ones you don’t under the circle that matches the finished diameter, just stick an awl in the center hole of the Bullzeye, pencil in the matching diameter hole, and scribe a circle.
The Bullzeye Center Finder will run you $15 before shipping.

Materials: Any Ikea Base Cabinet, Ikea Perfekt End Base Unit, Ikea Capita Legs, Any Ikea Wood Butcher Block Countertop (Lagan, Varde, Numerar), Wainscoting Panels
Description: Okay, maybe not, but with the money I saved on my kitchen island, I probably could have taken a nice little vacation. I turned an Ikea base cabinet into an island for my kitchen. First, I took a 21 inch base cabinet (the drawer front and door only cost a dollar each because it was discontinued) and attached a Perfekt base shelving unit to one side with some screws.
Then, to finish the back, I bought a package of $10 wainscoting from Lowe's and used liquid nails to glue them to the back. I attached Capita legs to the bottom and for the top, used a leftover piece of a Numerar butcher block top from my mom's kitchen. The whole project took only a few hours to complete and cost just over $100.

A longtime friend of the shop, Bob Miller, stopped by this weekend to show me which end of the shovel to use when planting trees. I?ve never had much success with things that grow in the yard and I loathe yardwork in general, but after the storm last week blew down the lone craptastic tree in my yard, I figured reinforcements were required.

Enter two $3 Bald Cypress twigs with big-ass root stems that we managed to get packed into the holes and firmly rooted into the ground before storms set in this weekend. A SharpShooter (which runs about $30 and is uber-helpful for gigs like this) helped dig the hole and a little spade shovel removed dirt quickly. Both trees wound up looking great, if small, and after I learned how to mix top soil with native dirt and break up the clods for replanting, the whole experience went quickly for the second tree.
It turns out this planting stuff isn’t so bad if the object in question is small enough.
