Let them eat {birthday} cake!

Saturday my squishy adorable snugly strong willed little baby turned 7! It’s hard to believe that she was once a chubby little thing that I could gobble up on a daily basis… All Kinsey wanted for her birthday (besides an American Girl doll that looks just like her) was “A cake that is strawberry, vanilla, [...]

A BALMY entertainment center

Materials: MALM chest of drawers, BILLY bookcase

Description: My girlfriend wanted an entertainment center where she couldn't see any of the DVD's. Also, more space for pictures. The center is an as-is MALM 6-drawer chest of drawers. For the side units, we combined a MALM 3-drawer chest of drawers and a BILLY book case. They're the exact same width, so it looks like it's one piece of furniture.

Here's how we did it:
1. Cut the bottoms of the sides of the BILLY bookcase, thus eliminating the "foot" at the bottom and the bottom permanent shelf.
2. Assemble the top & sides into a "U" shape, laying on the floor.
3. Put one of the movable shelves between the legs of the "U", to ensure the width is correct.
4. Lay a piece of 1/2" thick MDF board on the back side of the "U", drill pilot holes through the board into the top and sides of the book case, and attach the board. This provides rigidity.
5. Cut holes in backing to match locations of the "hand-holds" on the back-side of the MALM chest of drawers.
6. Slide the decorative backing into the grooves on the top/sides. Had to cut the length slightly to match the height of the sides.
7. Secure decorating backing to MDF backing by taking a cut piece of MDF from step 5, placing it between the two backings, and driving a screw through all three.
8. Paint the edges of the MDF black so it blends in.
9. Take the finished modified BILLY book case, and set on top of the MALM chest of drawers.
10. Put some screws through the MDF into the back of the MALM to hold everything together. That's it!

The "hand holds" on the back side of the MALM chest of drawers are perfect for running wires through, the top drawer of the unit directly under the DVD player has a power strip inside with everything plugged in.

As a Wooden Tangible Sequencer Plays Bach,
Meditations on Encoding Music

You may have seen it already as it makes its viral rounds, but an advertising video for Japanese mobile giant NTT Docomo is a poetic model of how musical events are encoded, whether through means tangible or digital. A track of pitches makes a wooden ball into a mallet, traversing a track as it is … Continue →

Yamahas iPad Tenori-On Videos Emerge, But Reveal
Some Limitations

On the road from futuristic instrumental concept to real-world product, the Yamaha Tenori-On as shipped lacked some of the functionality its creator, gifted media artist Toshio Iwai, originally imagined. Notably, wireless networking, which promised social music-making with other devices, was gone, replaced with a more-limited MIDI connector. Now, in a surprisingly literal translation from the … Continue →

Reason #189 To Own A Truck: Wheelbarrow

I arrived a little early this year to my parents’ house on Father’s Day because my dad had cut some limbs from the large tree out front. He’d freed them from the tree with a bow saw, as he has done since before I was born. This year, however, I brought the Alligator Lopper with me. After we separated all the wood we wanted from what we didn’t, we had a lot left over — as you can plainly see in exhibit (A) pictured above.

We hauled the leftover foliage from the front near the street to the backyard brush pile of the three-acre plot in one trip. Was this a big deal? To be honest, yes and no.

We could have walked them all back there in about 20 trips and gotten the same job done. But given that it was 101 F and we didn’t really feel the need to torture ourselves for the sake of exercise, the faster the better. A bonus came when Dad didn’t give me crap about my “little” truck, since I was the only one of us with plastic side caps on my bed rails and wasn’t worried the brush would scratch the truck.

As we’ve said in the past, trucks aren’t the only tool for many jobs, but damn if it isn’t easier when one is around.

How Much Is An Axe Worth

Trolling the Garrett Wade site today, I came across this “solid, dependable, Swiss-made axe,” pictured above. From the site:

“We think that because of their size, they are designed for campsite and clearance work. The Chopping Axe (that’s what we are going to call it) has a 23″ handle and weighs almost 5 lbs. The neck is so deep (2-1/2″) near the head that it seems almost ‘reinforced.’ This has to be deliverate. Its unusual weight gives it great momentum (power) when swung.”

The smaller camp axe is described as having a 15-1/2″ handle and weighing 2-1/4 lbs. It seems its only claim to fame is being “Swiss-made.” Pricing: $50 for the bigger model and $39 for the smaller one.

Maybe I’m just a little jaded, but that seems pretty damn steep for an axe. And did I miss something, or is there any reason that Switzerland is famous for axe-making? (I get the watch concept, but stores are already overrun with machine-assembled quartz-”movement” watches shipped from Switzerland. Does it really matter if the low-cost-labor-run assembly factory is located in Switzerland? Does the air there render quartz vibrations more accurate?)

Seriously, Amazon turns up a 5 lb. model with a 26″ handle for $22. And Northern Tool carries a 2.2 lb. camp axe [What’s This?] for just $9, complete with a hickory handle. And you can get a full-steel model with some bells and whistles at pretty much any sporting goods store for half the price of this “Swiss-made” treasure.

Now if you just like the look of it, I can see that. And there’s nothing wrong with, say, buying one of these to display above your fireplace or something. What the hell; I don’t buy everything in the world for practicality, either. But I can’t see springing for one of these over the cheaper alternatives for actual use. How different will it look after a few actual uses? Will that pretty red paint still be there? What happens when that handle stamp is covered in grime?

Am I wrong? (Seriously, let me know. It wouldn’t be the first time.)
