Socker Lamps

Materials: SOCKER zink flower pot, HEMMA cord set

Description: We needed some cheap lamps for our upstairs hall and stairs. Searching through the lamp and lighting section of our local IKEA, didn't give us the solution, so my husband came up with the idea of taking the SOCKER galvanized steel flower pot, cut a hole in the button matching the size of the HEMMA cord set using a jigsaw with a blade for cutting metal.

Screw the cord set on, put in a light bulb and hang your lamp up. Perfect lighting for a busy hall, for less than $8 a lamp.

How to Practice Foursquare Etiquette

Joining and using Foursquare to notify your friends of where you are can be enjoyable. However, sometimes you'll need to question how much information you'll be willing to share. Internet etiquette is sometimes overlooked when using Foursquare, especially with the optional Facebook and Twitter integration. A Beautiful Compilation from 40+ Artists Shows
Support for Japan

In a more connected world, we begin to understand more profoundly the life we share on a planet that is both fragile and potentially destructive. I remember the sobering feeling of listening to radio reports from Haiti during NAMM last year. There are countless calls for support for Japan, and I hope that, as in … Continue →

Head-Scratching Homeowner Fixes

After we sprung ahead into Daylight Savings Time, I changed the batteries in all my smoke detectors. Since we’ve lived in our house over ten years now, I figured I’d also take the time to replace the last of the old smoke detectors installed by the previous homeowner.

Imagine my surprise when I take one of the old detectors down, start to remove the bracket, and find drywall anchors sunk into the floor joist. I can think of two reasons why the anchors were there: the previous homeowner drilled holes that were too big and used the anchors to reduce the size of the holes, or the previous homeowner didn’t realize you don’t need drywall anchors in wood. Given some of the other repairs I’ve uncovered, I’d guess the latter, but maybe I’m being cynical.

It got me thinking, “what is the next homeowner going to think of some of my decisions?” Whenever I make changes or repairs to the house, I try to do it at least as well or better than a professional would. Not that I always succeed — sometimes I don’t have the skill or the time. I’m sure there are some things that I just live with that would make another person shake his head.

Since I know I can’t be the only person that runs into thing like this, I’m putting this question out to our readers: What is the weirdest repair you’ve run into or will admit to doing yourself? Let us know in the comments.
