I have received a couple of letters lately kindly asking what has happened to whipup lately. It’s changed they say, looks different, the focus is different, there is more cooking, more kids stuff. What is going on? At first I bristled slightly but then I had to admit it is all true – it has [...]

Most people would title this post "Photo Shoot for the magazine", it sounds great, but it would imply that I know how to take photo's or shoot pictures.
My big girl camera (SLR) just got delivered on Friday. It was great having it in time to take the pictures. But, I have not had time to learn how to use it.....I'm trying!
So, the magazine wanted my project to have a Christmas theme. Well, having flowers and greenery as a back drop was not going to work!
Nope, it's not looking like the holidays.
I was driving down the road thinking what could I use for a back drop.....There, on the side of the road, was a pile of old siding from a house!
I threw them in the trunk, took them home and nailed them to a couple of boards
Then painted and dark glazed them
And I had the perfect back drop for my top secret magazine photo's. It looks like an old building
I just set the chair in front of the boards then sat on my little green chair and shot away

I took a couple hundred pictures, narrowed it down to 72 made a CD of the pictures and mailed them off to the magazine....I hope a couple are magazine worthy!
So, the magazine will be on new stands in October, Of course I will remind you when it comes out.
Now, where was I......Oh yes, I was working on transforming the 80's light fixture I found last week at the estate sale, stayed tuned.
And thank you for all of your very kind coments and congratulations. I am sure everyone thinks this, but I know,I have the kindest followers in all of blog land!
Carol

Add to myYahoo!Last summer one of our two outside water faucets started leaking. By the time I shut off the water to the outside faucets for the winter, it had become a constant stream. So this spring before turning the water back on, I talked with a plumber and bounced my impending repair off him. He recommended that I could simply reseal it myself. The repair was simple, cheap, and will prevent me from worrying about my water bill skyrocketing this summer.
If you have a frost-proof outdoor faucet, chances are the seals will degrade over the course of 5-10 years and start leaking. The good news is that just about every hardware store carries a universal repair kit for your style of faucet. I have an eight-inch Mansfield 500 faucet (Mansfield was bought out by Prier a few years ago, but the repair kits on the shelves are the same).
Disassembly of the faucet was a simple screw turn, an adjustable wrench, and a simple twist of the rod. All the relevant washers, rubber seals and plastic parts were included in the $9 parts kit. I removed the old, replaced them with the new, and reassembled. The roughly 5-minute job and $9 kit was well worth it and a skill I?m assuming I will reuse many times as long as I live in the northern parts of the country.
Have you ever done a similar job? How long have the replacement seals lasted for you? I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Add to myYahoo!Going to your Local Comic Shop (LCS) should always be something you look forward to, not something that's a pain in the neck or a shot in the dark. You want consistency, a pleasant experience. But let's face it - some comic shops are few are far between, and you may feel "stuck" with whatever is nearby. Still, choosing a shop is a little more personal than deciding where to buy your groceries, even though most of the merchandise will be the same, from place to place. Whether you have a lot or not much to choose from, here are some tips to help you decide.

Materials: MOLGER storage stool, Shelf from As-Is section
Description: We are new to IKEA hacking.
Our curious little 1 year old was sure to burn herself on our dangerously hot radiators in our rental apartment. It is apparently NOT the landlord's job to make these safe. Thus, we set out to buy radiator covers, but I REFUSED to fork out hundreds of dollars (a piece) for two custom-made radiator covers for a RENTAL that we probably were going to leave at the end of our current lease. So this is what came of my stubborn frugality.

WE had a MOLGER stool, and I liked the look. I disassembled the stool. The slatted pieces that made the four sides of the stool were used as the front of the cover and allow for airflow. I then bought a couple pieces of wood to make the sides. I had to measure for the height that I wanted. This radiator cover doubles as a side table next to our couch. I checked the as-is section for a nice looking shelf for the top.
I put the slatted front together first. There are two shapes that come out of the MOLGER stool, one has two legs (U-shape) and one is just a square piece with slats. The piece without legs can be snugly fit in-between the legs to create one long slatted piece. I used tacks to secure the two pieces together. I needed to use a whole Molger M stool and a board from the hardware store in the middle to get the width we needed. Then we just hammered it together with skinny nails. Hammered the sides and top onto that. Hindsight, we should have put a layer of wood glue in-between pieces before nailing. It was an easy hack since a radiator cover is just a three-sided box with some sort of airflow. IT WORKS AMAZINGLY and is actually attractive. Probably someone with more patience or skill would use something more sophisticated than nails, but we are cheap and impatient.

Check the pictures for more details. You will notice the little plastic circles - these are the "bottoms" of what were the legs of the MOLGER stool. They come assembled with these little plastic skid stoppers. We just left 'em on.

Add to myYahoo! It cuts and scrapes; it peels and notches. It slits and marks; it’s a floor wax and a whipped topping… oops, wrong product. It’s Two Cherries’ new 2Cut. It may look like a chisel, but they claim it’s a universal tool for the craftsman as well a the do-it-yourselfer.
Like its name implies, the 2Cut has two different cutting edges: the 26 mm front edge like a regular chisel and the 90 mm long side edge for cutting use. The remaining side edge can be hit with a mallet. Two Cherries hardens the entire blade in a salt bath to achieve 60±1 RHC and polishes both cutting edges until they’re mirror bright.
Made in Germany, the 2Cut comes with its own micro-fiber holster to keep it safe. Its suggested retail is $58, but the only place it’s listed online is Dieter Schmid Fine Tools, where they’re charging ?30 ($44) before shipping.
