Whew! I'm back. I had 2 visitors the past week, which kept me super busy. My aunt and her adorable 2 year old son came in from L.A. We had a blast, but wow, I'm exhausted! Although busy, how could I resist this sweet little face?!?So cute!
Anyhoo, let's get focused...
I posted this pic a few weeks ago of my new favorite fabric-I used it to make curtains for the master bath. I wanted a print of some sort and had looked everywhere for a fabric that would tie in the gray walls, beige tile and charcoal doors/vanity, not in easy task I soon realized. I finally found this fabric at Joann's that was perfect.
However, the $45/yard price tag was steep. I was patient and waited a few weeks for a 50% off sale and used an additional 20% coupon I found online. I needed 1.5 yards, so the original full price would've been $67.50 (ouch). With the sale and coupon, I paid $27. I also used the existing window treatment to line the curtains. On a side note, I had looked at dozens of online fabric stores, as well as 6 local fabric shops. I think it's funny how I ended up finding fabric at a big-box fabric store. I guess it pays to keep your eyes open everywhere you go!
First, let's look at the terrible before:
And here is the after:
I had decided to remove the towel rack from the adjoining wall. It was a nuisance more than useful. Once that was gone, I tried to look for a grouping of art. I just couldn't find any prints that I liked for the space and was a little concerned that the steam from our showers may warp any prints. When I was at a thrift store looking for items to go above my kitchen cabinets, I found this sunburst mirror. I looked past the yellowy-gold finish and suddenly got a vision of a collection of mirrors for the bathroom wall.
The $3.99 price tag was certainly right. I gave it a quick coat of oil rubbed bronze spray paint that I already had on hand and it was ready to hang.
I grabbed 2 other mirrors I had in storage. One that was a clearance item from Michael's years ago and the other one I originally posted about HERE from Home Goods.
The whole wall cost $4 since 2 of the mirrors and the spray paint I already had. The best part is lining the shelf between the shower and tub with candles and how the candlelight is reflected in the mirrors.
I will be posting the winner of my My Memories Giveaway tomorrow (Tuesday 10/11/11) PROMISE! I apologize for being so far behind. if you haven't already entered do so now, HERE.
Have a lovely week! -S

Add to myYahoo!Fourteen months ago I discovered Thomas Paul and his Aviary Fabric. I saw the fabric in a model home and was smitten at that very instant. Later I was tickled pink orange when I found out the same fabric also came in tangerine. At that moment, my dining room’s fate was sealed. Well, the day [...]

Add to myYahoo!I was lucky enough to win a piece of art from a is for anika.

I wanted to make her something as a thank you. It seems like it must be hard to part with so many original artworks, so I tried to recreate the picture I won in thread. I wasn’t able to capture the awesome color blocking and depth of the original, but I still kind of like how it turned out.

I got the idea paging through the new Doodle Stitching book (photo here). I just printed out the image, masking taped it to the wood, and used a pin to poke holes following the drawing. You can’t poke the holes too close together or else they can merge when you pull the thread through. I had that happen a couple of times, but it wasn’t too hard to cover up.
What I like about it is that the wood is a nice stiff backing that makes long, straight stitches possible. I’m already working on another one :)

Add to myYahoo! This update I believe is worth a second post, as it makes visible the otherwise-mysterious algorithms producing music in our previous post. And yes, I believe this is “music,” naysayers aside. Whether it’s good music is in the ears of the listener, but if you can describe this much sound with this little code, imagine … Continue →

Add to myYahoo!Proposing to the woman you love takes a lot of courage, sincerity and creativity; not only will you need to decide if she is the one who you want to spend your whole life with, but you will also have to think of an original and beautiful way to make that certain moment even more breathtaking. Your proposal will have to express how much she truly means to you in order to hear her resounding ?YES!? Only then will the food-tasting and sending out of invitations in fancy wedding envelopes be possible. Before proceeding to the creative wedding proposals, keep in mind that these suggestions might work for some women and might not work well for others simply for the self-evident reason that not all women are the same. However, you can adapt any of these ideas or use the ideas from the list to come up with ones that suit your personal needs.

Photographer and Videographer Stefan Kohler came up with a complete DIYed Slider system built on top of the Igus platform for bones, a stepper motor for muscles, and an Arduino for brains (and lots of hard labor for hearts).
The slider mimics the excellent Cine Slider from Kessler, only for a fraction of the cost in money and whole lots blood sweat and tears (of joy of course).
