Heart Shaped Cupcakes
I gleamed this idea from where else, but Pinterest. You can find just about anything on there. I've been just waiting for a chance to try it out. It said you could use marbles or foil and since I didn't have any marbles I opted for foil.
It seemed to work just fine rolling a small ball of foilup to keep the liner indented to look like a heart. I probably could have filled them a little fuller, but I was afraid if they rose up too much they'd loose their heart shape.
Here's the Pièce de résistance
I also made some mini cupcakes with the remaining cake batter.

Add to myYahoo!A crown knot is a knot tied to the end of a rope that is double the diameter of the main rope. A crown knot is best used as a handle for something like the long end of a rope halter, but not for rope that is needed to be threaded in tighter spaces.

Materials: IKEA lampshade in suitable size, fishingline, stiff fabrick and gluegun
Description: I used a lampshade that I found good in size, removed all of the fabric and used the metal base of the shade.
The flowers were cut out of the fabric in two different sizes. The fishing line were attached to the lampshade frame and the flowers to the fishing line using felt furniture-floor protection circles.
Many hours later my own "night fly" lamp was finished.
See more of the night fly lampshade.

Materials: Expedit
Description: The Expedit shelving units are great: very simple in style, and great for books.
However:
- none of them really did fit the wall I wanted it to stand
- I really don't like those ugly crevices where the boards meet
- and the color needs to match my newly painted white walls
So I took two IKEA Expedit (2x4) in the super-standard (and rather ugly) white.
If you simply put two of these back to back, you end up having two of the wider "framing" elements side by side - and I didn't want any of that.
What I was really aiming for, was a 2x8 Expedit.

Add to myYahoo! What better way to spend a Friday lunch break than watching a couple of videos about old-school craftsmen making badass swords? If the information in these vids is to be believed, less than 30 people in the world make their living as sword-makers. Wow.
A friend of mine tipped me off to the interesting 3-minute-long video above about a Taiwanese sword-maker, part of a list of seven short films about “obsolete occupations” featured over on the blog Brain Pickings. (If you visit, check out the vid on the sign artist, too.) It’s light on specifics about the art, but still gives you a cool look at the true spirit of making — a man sacrificing much to learn a skill which he applies lovingly and hopes to pass on to his children. Read on past the jump for another video about a Japanese sword-maker.
I found this second video over on Etsy, a site where people make and sell things. Lots of what you’ll find there consists of clothing or knitted items, but you’ll find harder goods as well if you dig.
Though it’s nothing on the level of the skill shown here, I’ve always kicked myself for not setting aside more time to learn basic machine work from my father before he died. We kept planning to make time, but I was young (and had “more important” things to do) and he was old, with failing health. By the time he finally got his shop together, I’d dropped out of college and was working full time to pick up the pieces. I realize now that I should’ve just made the time. I could’ve bumped any number of those things that seemed so critical at the time and it wouldn’t have made any serious life difference to me.
Have a good weekend, all.

The CEL. (That’s what mechanics call the “check engine light.”) The folks over at Lifehacker recently posted a list of “the five most common causes of a check engine light and what you should do about them,” and it’s not a bad list. Check out the article if you wish, but I’ll save you some trouble. The list: faulty oxygen sensor, loose or faulty gas cap, faulty catalytic converter, faulty mass airflow sensor, bad spark plugs and/or wires. They suggest taking your car in for diagnostics (which will work, of course), but most Toolmongers know by now that with a simple reader you can at least see what the computer thinks is wrong. And if you don’t own a reader, you can generally rent one (or borrow one with the purchase price as security) from auto parts stores.
A few additional comments beyond Lifehackers, though, from the experience of one who’s suffered through most of these failures:
Replacing an oxygen sensor is generally dirt simple, usually involving just unscrewing the old one and replacing it with the new one. They’re sometimes a little difficult to get at, and you want to be careful about banging the replacement around when installing it. Otherwise, it’s no big deal. Definitely not worth paying a couple of hours of book rate at the shop if you’re tight on cash. Just make sure you get the correct sensor when you order the replacement. Hint: Take the old one with you when you go to pick up the new one, if possible. If not, snap a camera phone photo of the old one.
Yes, a leaky gas cap will indeed screw you over in emissions testing. If you have to replace yours, there’s nothing wrong with buying a cheap-ass version from the auto parts shop, but make sure it’ll fit under the door flap before you purchase. And just skip any locking version, or permanently unlock it and ditch the key. You’ll lose it eventually and get stranded.
In terms of replacing the catalytic converter, be sure to check your warranty first before you head down to the local Midas. Some manufacturers offer extended warranties (as much as 60,000 miles) on converters, so you might be entitled to a free (or cheap) one at the dealership. If not, you might (depending on where you live) have some options at the local muffler shop which will save you over OEM. Just be sure you’re compliant with local emissions standards.
Mass airflow sensors are usually a bolt-off, bolt-on replacement. Don’t spend $200 just to have someone turn a few nuts for you.
