Ever find yourself at the end of a day/job loading up crap on a trailer, thinking “Oh hell, it’ll stay. Do I really need a strap over it?” Short answer: Yes. Yes, you do. I saw the above video on the Today show the other day and tracked it down to post it here because I know I’m guilty of sometimes leaning a little on the hopeful side when securing a load. This video reminded me how stupid that can be.

Thankfully, it turns out the woman driving wasn’t injured. But seriously, folks. Pay attention to what you slap on a trailer or in the back of your truck haphazardly. Almost anything becomes an unpredictable missile when it ends up bouncing down the highway at 70 MPH.

One Scary Drill-Powered Trike

A reader turned us on to this Gizmodo find: a seriously scary-looking trike powered by two Bosch power drills. The kicker: The maker claims it tops out around 18 MPH — with the pilot lying head-first about a foot off the ground.

I’ve seen (and made) plenty of crazy projects like this, but what makes this one stand out to me enough to mention here on Toolmonger is the workmanship. Click through to the site and check out the sweet chain/gearing setup that hooks the two drills together as a drive system. That’s not your average, ordinary kludge. Nor is what appears to be some seriously well laid-out tube fabrication and welding. The steering mechanism is pretty sweet as well: a computer-modeled and CNC milled “spline-shaped joint” that allows the rider to steer with his or her whole body.

Granted, this isn’t exactly practical transportation. But I’m fascinated by the handiwork.

Make Your Air Compressor Suck

Rather than buying a vacuum pump for clamping and veneering, connect Black Jack’s vacuum generator up to your air compressor as your vacuum source. You just need to make sure your compressor can supply 3CFM @ 90psi. Black Jack doesn’t state the pressure drop the generator can achieve, but all the retailers use 10psi drop in pressure for their example calculations.

Instead of using a pump, the vacuum generator uses the Venturi effect. Several sites show the handy diagram above to demonstrate the vacuum generator works. Compressed air is blown through a funnel which pulls the air surrounding the funnel along for the ride. Since this surrounding air is supplied by the attached vacuum line, it lowers the pressure in that line.

It looks like you’ll pay around $80 before shipping for the Black Jack Vacuum Generator.
