Feastrex NF-5 and NF-5ex Drivers at SSI 2011

We are big fans of single full-range driver loud speakers so we were excited to check out the Feastrex drivers. Michael Tang of Michael Tang Audio is importing the Japanese Feastrex NF-5 and NF-5EX drivers into Canada and had them on display at the show.

The 5" Feastrex NF-5 ($2000CDN, shown above) uses a large Alnico magnet. The handmade cones are made from Japanese Washi paper (a higher density fibrous paper) which is impressed in a spiral pattern with embossed ridges. The drivers surround is made from lamb skin.

The 5" Feastrex NF-5ex ($3000CDN, shown above) uses the same Washi paper cone and a lambskin surround, but with a motor that uses a field-coil magnet (electromagnet). The field-coil magnet can be operated between 10 and 17V dc. Changing the voltage allows you to change the damping of the driver. Michael uses a 12V car battery for the field-coil magnet. 16 ohms, 95 dB, 35 to 25,000 Hz (+/- 3dB).

A Mastersound Compact 845 SET powered the 5" Feastrex NF-5 drivers which were housed in a bass reflex enclosure (enclosure plans from Feastrex, shown below), no passive filters were used. The speakers sounded excellent, wide soundstage and impressive depth. The single drivers delivered superb clarity with vocals to die for.
Michael indicated that he is working on a transmission line enclosure design for use with the Feastrex NF-5 and NF-5ex drivers which he plans to have ready for the TAVES (Toronto Audio and Video Show) this fall.

Attempting to get through the DIY Project Parade links (you guys are AWESOME!), I saw the little thumbnail from Desiree at Camelot Creations. I LOVE Restoration Hardware for inspiration and like Desiree, I loved this clock...
The price makes my jaw drop. $1495.00! Unless you're the winner a multi-million dollar lottery, I don't know anyone who would spend that on a replication of a Paris clock - purely decorative. It doesn't function as a clock, just looks like one. Do you?

Desiree decided she must have it. And she DOES have it. A DIY version. Cost? An unbelievable $3.78! Her DIY pallet version is gorgeous...

Yuri's Night Bay Area 2011

We just got word that the Maker Faire folks will be exhibiting at Yuri's Night Education Day tomorrow at NASA Ames! We'll be bringing a few projects to show off for part of the day to the kids and educators who will be attending. Yuri's Night is an annual worldwide party to celebrate Yuri Gagarin's first flight into space. This year is the 50th anniversary. Even if you're not in one of the classes attending the Bay Area Eduction Day, you can check the list of events to see if there's one happening near you or register your own event.

Project Kancil: What's next

So what's next? If you read my "2011 plans for my Project Cars", there are several things left for my Kancil. So now I got 3 things in my mind, J-mode lip, lowered spring, Mira L200s rear lamp. Can't really make a decision as 3 of the items above are in the same price range and this time only 1 item is allowed.
To be honest, I am more to the Mira L200s rear lamp as you may know that the Malaysia government is starting to not allowing halfcut items to be imported into the country. So better get it when the item is still available. And compare to J-mode lip, I can always get the local made product although the quality may not be as good as the original J-mode lip from Japan. Same goes to the lowered spring as there are a lot of local brand that still producing lowered spring for Kancil. Thus there is no worry about the shortage of item.
Here are some of the pictures of these 3 items. I will create a poll and hope you guys help me on decision making as I am going to get either 1 of these tomorrow.
