Spring Fever

If you follow me on Facebook, you may have seen my sneak peek photo on Friday. I stopped by Home Goods on the way home from work and picked up several colorful pieces to add to the house. It's this time of year that I start getting really antsy for Spring and crave the fun, fresh colors of the new season, so I was anxious to bring in some much needed color. I'm going to be dividing up my finds in a few posts, as I got pieces for a couple of different rooms.

First up...new art for our great room!
Even though it is a large piece of art at 3 feet tall with bold, bright colors, I think the abstract design is muted enough to not be too much.
I layered an old mirror, a picture frame and horseshoe purchased from Hobby Lobby for $2 for some luck:)I also picked up a bright yellow garden seat in a funky pattern. As soon as I saw it, I just couldn't resist, especially as it matched the new art perfectly!Isn't it fun?!I went on a bit of a shopping spree! Can't wait to show the rest of the finds.xoxo, s

Plastic Storage Sheds — Not Just For Kids

Yeah, it looks more like one of those kiddy-castles than it does a shed. But still, this might be the only real solution for some folks (like me, sadly) whose overly-zealous homeowner’s association won’t allow any kind of construction of any sort in a backyard — even if it’s not visible from the street. So if building one’s own isn’t an option, do these sheds hold up?

Rubbermaid’s literature touts the plastic as a benefit: “no rot, no rust, no problems.” But I can’t help but wonder if the plastic slowly disintegrates like the arm rests on lawn chairs. If so, how long does it last? They do have a point; provided it lasts at least as long as a wood or metal counterpart, I suppose I can’t really bitch.

The one you see pictured starts at around $425 and is 52″ x 48″ and 6′ high. That’s about enough to hold a push mower, or at least some of the overflow of things that I don’t want cluttering up my garage, like a string trimmer, fuel, etc. Rubbermaid also says that their wall anchors work inside the shed, so you can add things like shelves and other organizational stuff to fill it up properly.

Is This The Best Low-Price Soldering Station

A friend asked me today to recommend a decent low-buck soldering station, and I have to admit I was a bit stumped. I looked around online, and what you see above was the best one I found. But I’m far from the best judge when it comes to soldering irons. I have a cheap POS iron that I probably picked up from Radio Shack (for too much cash) years ago. So my question to you: Is the Weller pictured above a good recommendation?

Its specs seem pretty straightforward: 5-40W adjustable with a single standard tip and a temperature range up to 900 degrees F. What I like about it is that for $40 you get a whole station instead of just an iron. The one I have a) isn’t adjustable, and b) doesn’t come with a stand. Generally I get around that by trudging down to the garage and soldering on my big-ass metal workbench. But that’s pretty lame. I’ve heard good things about Weller, but I’m not enough of an electronics guy to have a strong opinion.

Let me (and my friend) know what you think in comments. And if this is as decent as it looks, I’m gonna buy one the next time I have $40 to spend.

Lack coffeetable drawing

Materials: Lack, black marker, Glitsa

Description: We have a Lack coffee table that has been used for six years, and unfortunately there were some small damages on the tabletop. I first found it a too big and too white surface to put in our new living room, but I did want to use the table because it's a very practical one. So I decided to make a drawing on it, so that it would cover the damages and make it a less white & more unique table.

I used a black marker for this drawing. They always say black markers are permanent, but it's easy to wash the ink off with a rough sponge. There will always get scratches on the table, so in time the drawing would just damage and disappear... So I had to roughen the tabletop a little bit first, after that I made the drawing (took a couple of days...) and then I finished it with 3 layers of Glitsa lacquer. The result is quite nice, I think :)

Bench for shoes with besta

Bench for shoes with besta
Materials:
2 Besta double benches, 1 Besta single bench, painted wooden board

Description:
We needed a bench for shoes in our hall, so we took the Besta benches, put them on feet and placed them in line. We used the Besta doors and these invisible push-in door openers so there are no annoying handles outside.

Then we painted a wooden board in an ebony colour and placed it on the Besta benches. We didn't fix it because it's really heavy - there are just some rubber pinches underneath so that it doesn't slip when you sit on it.

Put some pillows on it and shoes inside - ready! It took just a few ours. most time we've waited for the paint to dry. ;)

See more of the Besta benches.
