New FaceLift on "Installing Crown Molding" Ebook

By Mark J. Donovan

I finally got around to using some new tools to create good looking Ebook covers. The Installing Crown Molding Ebook has been a popular product over the years at HomeAdditionPlus.com, but maybe with this new cover look even more potential customers will agree!
Actually the new tool was an old tool that I've been using for years, Photoshop. I just found some useful online tips to create professional looking Ebook covers using Photoshop, and a couple of ebook cover templates that I downloaded for free. In less than 3o minutes I was able to create this ebook cover, and most of that time was playing around with the creative artwork.
For more information on how to install your own crown molding see: "Install Crown Molding Ebook"

Open Source Hardware Logos

Hey internet: You've got some good artists out there, and we could use a little help, right now!

Today is the last day to submit entries for the new Open Source Hardware logo -- There are over 100 entries so far, and you can enter your own sketch by posting it there in the forum.

The official requirements are that it is (1) easy to print/see on a circuit board or schematic document and (2) that it signify "open-ness." To part (1), I'd add, it should be easy to carve/see milled into a block of aluminum-- open hardware isn't just about electronics! --and to part (2), I'd add that locks and keys aren't always the best way to indicate that something is "open." (Locks are often shut. There are plenty of things that never are-- Klein bottles come to mind.)

So, now is the "last minute" -- and time to send in your own entry. We've got a whole lot of entries that won't look good on a circuit board (or milled into aluminum), and a whole lot of entries with locks and keyholes that don't necessarily send the right message. Care to lend a hand?

Mill Small Logs On Your Bandsaw

The wood for your next project might be hiding in your woodpile. With Carter’s AccuRight log mill and a bandsaw, you can turn those wood logs into usable boards or turning blanks. The 20″ long by 8″ wide log mill holds the wood securely so you can cut the necessary flat surfaces for safely resawing the log on your bandsaw.

The mill rides a bandsaw’s miter slot on an adjustable steel bar. The table is CNC milled from MDF, and the steel fence provides solid support for the material clamp. The clamp ends can be moved to any of the fence slots to accommodate the log you’re cutting.

Pricing for Carter’s AccuRight log mill starts at $129 before shipping.

Cooking up Sounds, with One Synthesizer Every Day

John Keston of Audio Cookbook sends in a fascinating project: he’s producing one sound each day from a different synthesizer. Sounds like a great way to build up a library of sounds. He writes: On January 5, 2011 I started a new project on AudioCookbook.org called “One Synthesizer Sound Every Day”. It’s in the vein … Continue →

Makita’s 12v Max Lineup

In the last few years, it seems like the major players in the pro-level Li-Ion 12v market have typically been red or blue in color. However, Makita has recently expanded its line to include offerings that might look familiar if you frequent other expanded lines. It?s funny how standard lineups come about.

Makita?s line has been expanded to offer two driver drills, an impact driver, circular saw, vacuum, and of course an LED flashlight. They’re also getting the jump on the combo kits by making a kit for almost every combination of tools — so many we couldn?t fit them all in our normal graphic.

The lineup was good before, but with the addition of new tools like the flashlight and impact drills, it?s about as duty-oriented as any other system available. The drills come in at around 200 in-lbs. each and the impact drill is rated at 800 in-lbs. The flashlight is rated for 800 LUX with a 9-hour runtime. If these numbers sound familiar, you might be onto something. It seems to be the numbers expected from a 12v platform across the board.

I think my favorite addition has got to be the 12v vacuum that accepts a standard battery pack and converts from upright to dust-buster style, handheld. Every manufacturer seems to have one oddball tool in the smallest Li-Ion class and it?s cool to see something a little different from Makita. At least it doesn?t have a laser on it.

We love to see competition in the 12v marketplace; it’ll ultimately push the entire field to create better products on the whole. For now, California contractors will no doubt be pleased they have a black-and-white version of the tools other guys have had access to for the last year or two. We’re curious to see if they stack up to expectations.

Garage Door Troubleshooting: Check Your Spring

Filed under: Small Spaces, Exteriors & Facades, Living Spaces, OutdoorsIf your garage door opener isn't in operating properly, you could be setting yourself up for an expensive repair down the road. We consulted a pro about one very common garage door troubleshooting issue. Examine your spring for a break in the coiled metal. Another sign of a broken spring is if the steel cables that run along the wall near the door jambs are loose. Photo: Joe Provey, Home & Garden Editorial[...]
