Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Dr. Seuss PartyFirst of all, happy birthday, Dr. Seuss! Today is Dr. Seuss‘s birthday, so what better time to post a Seuss-themed birthday party?

For baby.sweets4ever’s second birthday party, I was inspired by the book Hop on Pop. From the location, to the cake and POPcorn buffet, I tried to tie everything into the colorful and fun book. Admittedly, I do get a little crazy about theme parties, but I like to think everyone had a great time! :)

Here are a few teaser photos, but hop over to my project thread to see all of the photos, details and supply sources!

Apple Gets Into iPad Music with $5 GarageBand

For everyone who imagined something just like this, here it is. Apple is getting into mobile music production with a US$4.99 version of GarageBand that runs on iPad. It looks very impressive for a $5 app – which could be bad news for other music developers trying to set higher pricing for more serious apps. … Continue →

Color-Coded Sandpaper

At the end of January, A. J. Hamler wrote a blog entry ranting on several woodworking topics. One of his beefs was how sandpaper is hard to identify once you’ve cut up the sheet, since they only print the grit in one or two places — something we can all probably relate to. Here’s some sandpaper that I bet he’d like.

Color grit abrasives sold by Craft Supplies USA change the backing color of the sandpaper with each grit for easy identification. At a quarter a piece, you can buy a few stickers for around the shop to remind you which color matches which grit. They also print the grit on the back in large numbers.

Craft Supplies USA sells the sandpaper in 80, 120, 180, 240, 320, and 400 grit and claims the cloth-backed aluminum oxide abrasive is flexible and long-lasting. You’ll spend $6.50 for a single 3-3/4″ wide by 6+ feet long roll, or $33 for a combo pack containing rolls of every grit. It’ll cost you a whopping $11 to ship a single roll, but at least shipping only goes up a dollar for the combo pack.

DIY Dorothy Draper Chests

Materials:
Rast Dresser

Description: 1) I bought 2 Rast dressers from IKEA, and assembled the tables, except for the drawers.

2) I primed the 'body' of the dresser {assembled} and the fronts of the doors and then sprayed them using RustOleum's black lacquer spray. I did 2 coats to get good coverage.

3) I took inspiration pics from Dorothy Draper chests online, and blew them up to be able to draw the shape of the inlay on a piece of transparent paper that I cut to be the same size as each drawer. Here is where the measure-twice-cut-once rule really applies! I cut the stencil using an art Xacto knife, leaving gaps so that the centre of the stencil stayed attached to the outside. I secured the stencil onto the drawer using painter's tape.

4) Using Liquidtex's Iridescent Rich Gold heavy body acrylic paint, I carefully painted on the design. I removed the stencil after allowing the paint to dry for about 1 hour. I taped off the gaps that remained (due to the stencil) and filled those in. I let this dry over night and then went over the gold free-hand to make it even thicker afterwards.

5) I then put the drawers together on the built shelf, and put in some beautiful bronze ring pulls from Lee Valley Tools.

Crossing Over To The Dark (Field) Has Never Been
Easier

Crossing Over To The Dark (Field) Has Never Been EasierGlass is one of the hardest thing to photograph. It is transparent, hard to define, and punish for every spec of dust. In this post, we will explore two cheap, easy ways to ease the pain of shooting glass. And get stuffed with Pringles while doing so.

Bright Field and Dark Field are two lighting techniques used to shoot glass I first saw the term while reading Light Science & Magic though the principles are probably way older then the book.

Photographer Steve Bennett came up with a sweet and super cheap setup to perform both lighting schemes quickly and on a budget.
